Boosting Teamwork and Effective Problem Solving

Just like in team sports, solving problems requires the right team with the proper skills. Without it, completing the entire analysis process within the given time frame will be nearly impossible. At best, it will be extremely challenging. Working in the automotive industry involves cooperation with various departments. Teamwork is essential not only for problem-solving but also for performing daily tasks.

This is why building strong relationships with team members is so important.

Even if we don’t particularly like someone, we must learn to “separate the emotional level from the content level.” Doing so allows us to focus on solving the problem rather than looking for someone to blame.

There’s No “One-Man Hero” in Problem Solving

Unlike a Marvel movie, there is no such thing as a “one-man hero” in real-life teamwork. Collaboration gives us the opportunity to view problems from different perspectives. Why? Because each team member brings unique experience and skills to the table. This diversity creates a synergy effect, leading to more effective problem-solving.

Some training manuals suggest that team composition should change periodically. This idea has merit, but we should approach it rationally. Research on air crashes shows that over 80% of accidents occur when flight crews have worked together for only a few weeks.

Of course, some cases make team changes inevitable. Such as when a member receives a promotion or decides to pursue a different career path. In these situations, adding a new member who offers a fresh perspective, often called a “fresh eye view,” can benefit the team significantly.

Teamwork and competences

It’s no secret that certain roles, such as process engineers or technologists, are indispensable in problem-solving teams. Why should you work closely with them? Because their in-depth process knowledge is invaluable.

Additionally, it’s recommended to include employees who are directly involved in the operation being analyzed, such as production operators or team leaders. Their firsthand knowledge is crucial for verifying whether hypotheses developed during step D4 of the 8D process are accurate or need to be ruled out immediately.
